Assignment 2 Evaluation

I think this assignment was a lot better than my first one as I managed to get it all done alot quicker then I did the first one (even though I am uploading it today it has been done for weeks) . The first assignment helped me alot in learning what type of shots I would need to create the best atmosphere. The project was done fairly quickly as within the first week of the assignment being announced I went to watch the band I was going to do the assignment on so I got nearly all my pictures from this gig. It was then just a case of getting another actor to pose for my second CD cover which my friend duly obliged.

If I were to do it again I may have chosen a tougher type of portrait to take for the front cover as it is only one person standing on their own and this is very easy to do. The band pictures were alot harder to get because they were moving around alot and this complicated things and ending up in alot of shots ruined.

I did not really have any problems except maybe my subject of my photo not turning up on time but since I ended up getting the image and it looks great I don’t really see that as a problem. If I were to develop it further I would maybe go onto doing a band shot for a front cover with them striking a pose.

Photography Assignment 2 Research

For my research into CD covers I looked at some Iconic covers that had been done over the last 50 – 60 years I found some interesting covers and artists who had worked on them.

Hugh Syme created a lot of album covers for the band Rush which included the album cover for the album power windows 19 85. In this front cover there is a woman sat around looking out of a window with televisions sat around her. This to me looks like backward world were what is out side the window is more interesting then looking at a Television.

Brad Guise created the artwork for the album I am going too recreate and that is Vulgar display of power by Pantera. The album released in 1990 features a man being punched in the face. This picture is now iconic in the heavy metal scene and the man in the picture who is being punched was paid 10 dollars a time to be hit in the face. It took over 30 takes to get the scene right. Brad had originally took one with a boxer in a boxing glove punching but the band did not like it so they chose to go the route of the man being punched in the face.

CD album cover No:1 Idea

For my first album cover I am going to create it for a band that I like called Bad Hat Harry.

The name instantly brings up a wild west sort of feel to it so for my first cd cover I have decided to do it in the form of a wild west style wanted poster.

Wanted Poster

Wanted dead or alive

This is the style in which I have decided to do the CDs front page. This format will run through the full assignment and will include the back page being similar as well as the inside images.

Other bands have had success with this same style and here is an example of how it can be done effectively.

The outlaws

The outlaws

This is taken from an album by the outlaws and although this has all the band members on it my front cover will only have one of the band members on who will portray the character “Bad Hat Harry”

Photography Evaluation

Did your project work as planned?

Yes and no.

No because I had so much bad luck in taking the pictures and the amount of time it took me to get used to working the camera also made it less time to take the pictures. Weather was not great and also getting time with the correct cameras was a problem.

Yes because I got all  the images I wanted and I think they came out pretty well.  I tried to use leading lines as well as depth of field which in some of them is not as developed as planned which is a shame but I think you can still tell a little bit that it is there.

Could it be improved?

Yes it could be, I am a perfectionist and I think a work like this is never finished. I could have used different shots, more personal, and less static shots. I also could have used models to make the photos stand out a bit more, get a bit of emotion in to them.
What were the main problems and how did you try to overcome them??

Camera time was the main problem, when ever I tried to get the best cameras out they were taken out by photography students so we were left with the powershots, this lead to hours of fiddling around getting the settings exactly how you wanted and then the shot would be ruined by lack of light, when if it had been good straight away  I would have got the shot.
How could your work be developed further?

I could maybe do more of a dead on comparison, find loads of similar objects to photograph and then set them side by side, this would lead the people to be able to see straight which was the better place to be or I could maybe add a village aswell and scale it that way, Village – Town – City. This would be good way too look at all ways of life in Britain.

Photography Hull Photos Research

The reason I chose these picture to show Hull was because the show I wanted to the cultured side of Hull as well an the normal day to day side. If I were to do it again I may have journey all around the city but with only 11 pictures to do I really wanted to get the town centre as my main theme. I used mainly the town centre as my theme except on the environment pictures which I used just outside the centre in East park.

Photography Hull Photos

Here are my photos for Hull I have split them into the 4 categories I have chosen. I have posted the photos for Withernsea in a different post and then you can make your own comparisons between Hull and Withernsea. Again I wonder if you will have the same opinion as myself or you will maybe see something in a way I haven’t.
